Peanut Butter/Lard Cakes for the Birds ("suet")
From the feeding station at Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary, Hereford, AZ
Melt together on low heat, and stir to blend:
- 2 cups (500g) chunky peanut butter
- 2 cups (400g) lard
When fat is melted, turn off heat. Immediately add dry ingredients one at a time, in order given, mixing well after each addition:
- 2 cups (350g) flour
- 4 cups (700g) corn meal
- 4 cups (400g) quick (not old-fashioned) oatmeal
Blend all ingredients thoroughly. Press mixture into a waxed-paper-lined 9-x-13-inch pan. Cool and cut into squares. Or, press into empty plastic commercial suet containers. Chill. Remove from containers as needed and place in suet baskets.
